I had the option then to either reload, or keep playing and forget the main quest. I (strangely) liked getting a message in Morrowind telling me I broke the main quest by killing an npc. I think this would be the perfect solution. This would prevent quests failing through no fault of the player while retaining the freedom to be able kill anyone you want. Make it so they can't be killed by another NPC or monster, yet still be able to be killed by the PC if he so chooses. You can easily solve this by having semi-essential NPCs.
